Tips from our team
A road trip in South Africa is high on the list for many travelers – and for good reason! Good to know: the seasons here are exactly reversed compared to those in Europe. As seasoned travelers, we can tell you that April/May (South African autumn) and October/November (South African spring) are the perfect times for your South Africa adventure.
Especially if you want to explore the iconic Garden Route. During these calm transitional seasons, you’ll enjoy pleasant temperatures between 20-28 degrees, minimal rainfall, and surprisingly few tourists.
It’s no wonder we organize our South Africa Nomads trips during these months – you’ll experience the country at its very best! Curious about what to expect in each season? Read on!
Climate in South Africa
South Africa is big – really big. And you can feel it in the weather! During your road trip with South Africa Nomads, you'll pass through different climate zones. In Cape Town, there's a Mediterranean climate, perfect for the world-famous vineyards and a refreshing dip in the ocean. As you drive east along the Garden Route, the climate becomes increasingly subtropical. At Addo Elephant National Park, where you drive among the elephants, it’s already much warmer and more humid than in Cape Town.
The South African spring and autumn are the ideal seasons to explore the country. The temperatures are just right – not too hot for your road trip adventures – and it’s wonderfully quiet since the big tourist crowds haven't arrived yet. Whether you're spotting whales in Hermanus or going on safari in Addo Elephant National Park – everything is just a little more relaxed during these times.
The Seasons in South Africa
In South Africa, the seasons are exactly the opposite of those in Europe. While we have summer here, it's winter there.
Winter – June to September
Winter is drier but cooler. Daytime temperatures are often just right, but it can get quite chilly at night. Most of the rain in Cape Town falls during this season.
Spring – October to November
In spring, nature bursts into a colorful celebration of wildflowers. Especially in October, when the spring edition of South Africa Nomads kicks off, it’s incredibly green. Perfect weather around 20-28 degrees with few tourists since it falls between two peak seasons.
In Cape Town, you'll enjoy pleasant temperatures – ideal for exploring the city. As you drive from Hermanus towards the Garden Route, it just gets better. In Mossel Bay and Jeffreys Bay, it’s perfect surf weather, and in Addo, the elephants are extra active.
Summer – December to March
This period features warm days and significant rain in some regions. December is peak season due to the local summer holiday – expect crowds on the Garden Route and higher prices. It’s a great time for a beach holiday, but for the ultimate road trip in South Africa, there are better times.
Autumn – April to May
Autumn is also perfect for a road trip in South Africa! Mild temperatures, beautiful autumn colors, and wonderfully quiet. The summer crowds are gone, and the winter chill hasn’t set in yet. April and May are also top months for safaris in Addo – the animals are super active and easily visible. No wonder we plan our trips during this time.
