If you do not take out a damage waiver, you will have to pay a deposit of €1000, and the excess can be up to €3000 in case of damage.

Note: you will always need to pay a small deposit of 4000 ZAR to the rental partner for fines, unfilled fuel, etc. The main driver must bring a credit card in their name. A credit card from someone else is not allowed.

Travel and Assistance Insurance

Want to travel worry-free? Then take out a personal travel and assistance insurance.

Cancellation Insurance

Worried that your trip might not go ahead due to unforeseen circumstances? Then take out a cancellation insurance.

Food and drinks

In the roadbook, you'll find all sorts of charming restaurants where you can enjoy delicious meals, often at a great price. Perfect for lunch or if you're looking to go out for the evening. We do recommend not driving at night, but instead ordering an Uber. Some lodges also have a restaurant.

What documents do I need to travel to South Africa?

To be allowed to drive during the tour in South Africa, you need the following:

  • A valid passport that is at least 30 days valid after your trip.
  • (international) driver's license that has been valid for at least 1 year.
  • A credit card in the name of the primary driver.

Our rental partner does not require an international driver's license; a national license B/EB is sufficient. An international driver's license in English is also valid in combination with a national license.

How old do I need to be to drive in South Africa?

You must be at least 18 years old and have held a driver's license for at least 1 year in order to drive the car.

What's in the roadbook?

Our roadbook contains all the information you need for a successful road trip in South Africa.

On one hand, it includes the complete route, featuring all the hotspots and hidden gems that you won't find in major travel guides. It also provides information about safety in South Africa and the safest routes. The places we recommend are always suggestions: you can choose which sights to visit and how much time you want to spend there.

Additionally, our roadbook includes various nice spots where you can grab something to eat or drink.

Is the car manual or automatic?

All cars are automatic.

Can I customize the trip to my liking?

We offer a fully planned road trip in South Africa, so it's not possible to adjust the duration and itinerary of the trip. However, you're free to extend your journey on your own initiative by staying a few extra days in Cape Town or traveling to another country afterwards.

Where will I be staying exactly?

You will stay in carefully selected B&Bs, lodges, hotels, and guesthouses. You'll always have a private bathroom and at most places, breakfast is included. All the accommodations we partner with are rated at least 8.5 or higher and are small-scale. There is often a swimming pool available.

How many people can join us on this trip?

Traveling with the 4x4 + rooftop tent?
The Suzuki Jimny 4x4s are suitable for 2 people.

Choosing lodge-to-lodge?
We offer a VW Polo or similar for 2-3 people.

There is space for one group of three people on every departure date. If you're traveling with three people, the base price drops by €50 per person.

Traveling with 4 people?
Then you can book two cars by making two separate bookings. Just send us an email, so we know you're traveling together.

Traveling alone?
Check out WeAdventures. They offer a similar route as a group trip to South Africa.

How does the payment process work?

Within 5 days of your registration, you'll need to pay a 35% deposit to confirm your road trip. After that, you have until 45 days before departure to change your options and pay the remaining amount. If you make changes, the deposit will be automatically recalculated.

Additionally, you'll need to pay a security deposit shortly before departure. The amount of the deposit depends on the car insurance you've chosen (more info under the car insurance section).

There are various payment options. If your payment failed, there may have been an error when entering the reference number, or you may have exceeded your account limit.

Can I still cancel my trip?

You can always cancel your road trip in South Africa. Here you can find the terms and conditions.

What are the Superflex cancellation policies?

These terms are available for anyone who books early. You can use them to change your road trip to another date within the same season (subject to availability) or cancel free of charge until May 1, 2026.

Note: The Superflex cancellation terms do not apply to flight tickets; these cannot be canceled once booked.

Is there support on site?

Upon your arrival in Cape Town, you'll be warmly welcomed by our local partners. They will greet you and provide you with information before your journey begins.

During your trip in South Africa, you can find all sorts of useful information in our app. Additionally, just before your departure, you'll receive an invitation to join a WhatsApp group with all the participants leaving on the same date. In that group, you can communicate with each other, and there will always be someone from the team available and on-site in case of emergencies.

Do I need vaccinations for my trip to South Africa?

There are no mandatory vaccinations for South Africa unless you have stayed in a high-risk yellow fever country within the seven days before entering South Africa or have been in transit (at an airport) for 12 hours. In that case, a vaccination against yellow fever is required. Are you flying through Ethiopia? Then you need a yellow fever vaccination in case your flight gets delayed.

Regardless of the length of your stay, the following vaccinations are recommended for South Africa:

  • DTP vaccination (diphtheria, tetanus, and polio)
  • Hepatitis A vaccination (infectious jaundice). Hepatitis A is only important if you are traveling under primitive conditions.
  • If you haven't had measles or a measles vaccination, a MMR vaccination is recommended for South Africa.

You can check this website for more information or contact your family doctor or the GGD (Public Health Service) in the Netherlands.

Is this route safe to travel?

This route in South Africa is generally a safe and popular area to explore, especially for travelers who are well-prepared. During your trip with Travelbase, you’re always in good hands: a local partner is ready to assist with any questions or issues, and you’ll be traveling with other travelers, staying in the same places each night, so there’s always someone nearby. Plus, you’ll receive a comprehensive roadbook with practical tips, including advice on safety and which neighborhoods or roads to avoid. This way, you can enjoy your adventure without worries!

Reading tip: we previously wrote a blog about safety along the Garden Route.

What about wildlife along the route?

In South Africa, you'll mainly encounter smaller wildlife like birds, monkeys, and sometimes hyraxes (rock rabbits). You won't find big wild animals like lions or elephants in the wild. They only live in enclosed reserves that you can visit. Keep nature in mind by not feeding animals and leaving your surroundings tidy. This way, you’ll stay safe and respect the local fauna.

Is it safe to drive around the Kruger Park on your own?

Yes, it is absolutely safe to drive through Kruger National Park on your own. The park has an excellent road network with clear signage, so getting lost is not an issue. The animals are used to cars passing by, allowing you to stop and enjoy watching them peacefully.

Of course, there are a few basic rules you need to follow. Stay in your car unless you're at an official picnic spot or rest camp. Keep a safe distance from the animals; you're a guest in their habitat.

How do I get to Amsterdam from Belgium?

Our flights depart from Amsterdam, so you can fly directly to your destination. What's the easiest way to get here if you live in Belgium?

By train
The fastest and most comfortable option is the IC train from NS International. From Brussels, you can travel to Schiphol Airport in about 2 hours for around €44-56 (one way).

By FlixBus
A budget-friendly option is the FlixBus. It departs from Brussels North and takes you directly to Schiphol Airport. Tickets start at €10, but the travel time is a bit longer (3-4 hours).

By car
Prefer to drive yourself? It takes about 2.5 hours (215 km) from Brussels. Keep in mind parking fees, fuel costs, and any tolls in Belgium.

Drop-off
Of course, you can also be dropped off by family or friends at the departure hall. The kiss & ride zone is located right in front of the departure hall.

Which name should I enter when booking the flight tickets through South Africa Nomads?

When you register, please use your official name, exactly as it appears on your passport or ID.

Would you like to do your part for nature?
